September 11 – Manny Machado moved into the top spot for Padres’ all-time home runs as the San Diego Mariners beat the host Seattle Mariners 7–3 on Tuesday night in the opener of a two-game league series.

Fernando Tatis Jr. also homered and Yu Darvish homered to give the Padres their first win since May 19 (82-64), ending a two-game losing streak. Roberto Suarez recorded his 32nd save of the season over the final four games.

San Diego is 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and a half-game ahead of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the race for the NL’s top wild card.

Carl Reilly and Luke Reilly had strong games for the Mariners (73-72), who lost for the second time in their last six games. Seattle is 4 1/2 games behind the Houston Astros for first place in the American League West and four games out of the final American League wild-card spot.

Machado hit a two-run single off Seattle starter George Kirby (11-11) in the sixth inning for his 164th home run with the Padres and gave San Diego a 5-2 lead. Nat Colbert is the Padres’ former home run leader, hitting 163 for the team from 1969-74.

In the seventh inning, Machado hit a two-run single with the bases loaded and two outs to make the score 7–2.

Trailing 2–0, the Padres took the lead in the third inning. Donovan Solano and Luis Arraez had singles, then Tatis hit a three-pointer to right center to give San Diego the lead.

Reilly hit a two-out home run in game one, his 30th long ball of the season. Reilly hit his 19th home run in game two, giving Seattle a 2–0 lead.

The Mariners didn’t score again until the seventh inning, when Justin Turner led off with singles to Jorge Polanco and J.P. Crawford scored Turner. Seattle got out early thanks to Julio Rodriguez, who grounded into a double play in the bottom of the inning.

Darvish (5-3), making his second start since May 29 after being placed on the injured list (left groin strain) and restricted list (personal family issue), allowed two runs on seven hits in five innings. The right-hander didn’t walk a single ball and struck out five.

Kirby allowed five runs on seven hits in five innings, walking four and striking out four.
