September 11 – Right-hander Chris Bassitt struck out eight in six innings and allowed two runs and three walks to Davis Schneider as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the New York Mets 6–2 on Tuesday night.

Bassett (10-13) allowed one run, five hits and one walk to improve his career record to 2-0 against the Mets, his former team.

The first two games of the three-game series were tied. The Mets (79-66) are tied with the Atlanta Braves for the third National League wild-card spot.

It was the Mets’ second loss in 12 games. It was Toronto’s second win in eight games (69–77).

Mets left-hander David Peterson (9-2) allowed five runs (four earned), eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.

The Mets scored once in the first game. Francisco Lindor and Jesse Winker both had singles. The Blue Jays failed to mount a comeback due to Pete Alonso’s broken bat, ending the inning with a double to Bassett and an RBI single to center by Brandon Nimmo.

Toronto tied the game on second base. Ernie Clement reached first base when Mark Vientos hit a grounder to third base. Clement reached second base on a wild pitch and advanced to third base on Spencer Horwitz’s fourth wild pitch. Leo Jimenez then lined an RBI single to left.

Toronto took a 5-1 lead in the third quarter. After Peterson hit a ball wildly in the first, Daulton Varsho moved to second on a bunt single. He scored on Alejandro Kirk’s double to right. Clement’s inside shot eluded diving Winker and Schneider for a triple.

Jimenez was hit by a pitch and Joey Loperfido hit an RBI single to left.

Toronto reliever Brandon Little hit hitter Jose Iglesias with a leadoff double in the seventh inning. Iglesias advanced to third on a tremendous one-out performance. Pinch-hitter Tyrone Taylor walked to load the bases. Jack Popp replaced Little and scored on a pass.

Clemente had a one-out triple in the seventh at home against Huascar Brazoban. Alex Young took the lead and scored on Horwitz’s double to increase the Blue Jays’ lead to 6-2.
