ATHENS, Sept 12 (Askume) – Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said on Thursday that unilaterally dissolving the Schengen area would not solve the problem of rising migration flows.
Germany this week announced plans to impose tougher checks at all its land borders in what it said would be a crackdown on irregular migration.
The trial in the vast area of universal free movement – Europe’s Schengen zone – will begin on September 16 and initially last for six months.
“The answer cannot be to unilaterally end the Schengen agreement and leave the ball to the countries on Europe’s external borders,” Mitsotakis said in an interview with a Greek radio station.
He said the solution would require “fair agreements” between all European countries and recognition of the need to protect Europe’s external borders.
