Sept. 12 – Bryan Woo pitched a perfect seventh inning and the Seattle Mariners beat the visiting San Diego Padres 5–2 on Wednesday night.

The Mariners (74-72) won for the fifth time in seven games, closing the gap to division-leading Houston in the AL West to 3 1/2 games.

Fernando Tatis Jr. led the Padres (82-65), who lost for the fourth time in their last six games and trailed the Arizona Diamondbacks at halftime in the National League wild-card standings.

In the seventh inning, Wu’s perfect game, no-hitter, and game-winner were ruined when Tatís hit a 1–0 fastball just inside the left field foul pole.

Jurickson Profar then hit a double to the right corner. Woo struck out Manny Machado but was pulled after issuing a two-out walk to Jake Cronenworth. Xander Bogaerts welcomed reliever Troy Taylor with a run-scoring single to center field, then Taylor struck out Jackson Merrill to get out of trouble.

Mariners closer Andrés Muñoz retired the batters in the ninth inning for his 20th save of the season.

Woo (8-2) was charged with two runs on two hits in 6 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked one and struck out five.

Padres starter Michael King (12-9) gave up three runs — ERA — on four hits in five innings. The right-hander walked two and struck out six.

The Mariners scored first with three runs in the third inning. With one out, Josh Rojas walked to load the bases and Victor Robles hit a pitch. Julio Rodriguez hit a potential inning-ending double grounder to shortstop Bogaerts, but he nicked a ball to second baseman Cronenworth, the pass was to Cal Raleigh, who hit a run-scoring single to right field. Luke Raleigh hit a two-out single to right field to make the score 3–0.

The Mariners added two runs in the sixth off reliever Adrian Morejon. Reilly and Justin Turner started the inning with walks and both runners advanced on wild pitches. With one out, J.P. Crawford hit a two-run double into the right corner to extend the lead to 5-0.
