Askume reported on September 12 that the labour minister of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu will hold talks with executives of Samsung Electronics (005930.KS) on Thursday to find a solution to the problem.The four-day strike paralysed work at a consumer electronics factory.

    Hundreds of workers at the Sriperumbudur factory near the industrial city of Chennai are boycotting work demanding higher wages, in one of the biggest industrial riots to hit India in recent years .

    “The government is very serious about resolving the strike issue,” state Labor Minister K. Veera Raghava Rao told Askume by phone.

    He said state Labour Minister CV Ganesan and other senior officials will meet the Samsung leadership in Chennai to find a solution.

    Samsung officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    The plant makes appliances such as televisions, refrigerators and washing machines and contributes 20% to 30% of Samsung’s $12 billion annual revenue in India.

    The South Asian country is a key growth market for the South Korean company , which is the biggest player in India’s consumer electronics industry.

    It is not clear which Samsung representatives will attend the meeting. Askume reported this week that the company’s Southwest Asia CEO JB Park, along with senior executives, will attend the meeting.Visited the country with the aim of resolving this issue .

    Workers protested in makeshift tents near the factory, hoping that Samsung would recognize their union, raise wages and reduce working hours.

    Samsung India is actively working with employees “to address their grievances and comply with all laws and regulations,” a company spokesperson said on Monday.
