LOS ANGELES, Sept 12 (Askume) – Which drama will dethrone three-time winner “Succession” as TV’s best drama? Emmy voters will reveal their choices at a red-carpet ceremony on Sunday, with historical epic “Shogun” tipped as the favorite.

The story set in feudal Japan has already set a record for most Emmy wins in a single season. “Shogun” won 14 trophies at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, a preseason event that honors guest actors and crafts such as cinematography and production design.

In the comedy competition, the tense Chicago restaurant tale “The Bear” earned honors for the second consecutive series. It received 23 nominations , the most nominated comedy of the year.

Both shows, which air on the FX cable network, are a big night for owner Walt Disney (DIS.N) , which will broadcast the ceremony live on ABC from downtown Los Angeles.

“Schitt’s Creek” father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy will host the ceremony just eight months after the last Emmy Awards. The 2023 honors have been postponed until January 2024 due to the writers and actors strike in Hollywood.

As the Roy family saga “Succession” comes to a close, the new winner of the night’s biggest award, best drama, will be revealed on Sunday.

Shogun, a remake of the popular 1980s miniseries, is a clear favorite. The show has won praise in both the English and Japanese versions for its lavish sets and costumes and for retelling the story from the perspective of the Japanese characters. The 1980s version focused on a British sailor whose ship sank in Japan.

Stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are competing for the top acting award.

“Shogun was a huge undertaking, an epic project that took many years to complete,” said Clayton Davis, senior awards editor for the Hollywood publication Variety. “This will be a huge success for them.”

Competing with “Shogun” is the final season of “The Crown,” the Netflix (NFLX.O) drama about the British royal family .

Elizabeth Debicki is considered the frontrunner for Supporting Actress in a Drama for her role as Princess Diana in Days Before Her Death.

      Comedy performances

According to awards watchers, “Bare,” which won best comedy in January, is likely to win again, although debate continues over whether the tale of family dysfunction and tense kitchen situations should be classified as a comedy.

Jeremy Allen White, who plays chef Carmine “Cami” Barzato, and co-star Ebon Moss-Barrach (Richie’s cousin) are expected to win best comedy actor and supporting actor, having received awards in January.

At January’s ceremony, Bears’ Ayo Adebiri was awarded best supporting actress in a comedy. She is now competing for the lead actress prize with “The Crackers” star Jean Smart, who has won two Emmys for her portrayal of septuagenarian comedian Deborah Vance.

HBO ‘s (WBD.O) “The Crackers” is seen as the show with a chance to beat “The Bear.” Because of the timing of previous seasons, the two have never competed against each other for Emmys, with the recently concluded third season of “Hackers” widely regarded as the best.

“I think the Bears still have the potential to grow,” said Joyce Eng, senior editor at awards website Gold Derby.

Other comedy competitors include ABC’s “Albert Elementary” and Hulu’s “The Only Murder in the Building.”

“Baby Reindeer,” which tells the story of a bartender who is stalked by a customer, is a frontrunner in the best limited series competition. Scottish comedian and star Richard Gadd says the Netflix drama is based on his true story, though the defamation lawsuit claims the stalker’s actions were exaggerated.

Limited series competitors include Netflix’s psychological thriller “Ripley,” FX’s “Fargo” and HBO’s “True Detective: Night Country,” starring lead actress nominee Jodie Foster.
