Askume September 12 – Russian shelling killed three Ukrainians working for the International Committee of the Red Cross and wounded two others in border villages in the Donetsk region on Thursday, Ukrainian authorities said.

“Russia has committed another war crime. Today, the occupiers attacked vehicles of the International Committee of the Red Cross carrying out a humanitarian mission in the Donetsk region,” Russian President Zelensky said on XTV.

Regional Governor Vadim Filyashkin said on the Telegram messaging app that the village of Viroliubka was hit by shelling and there were no casualties.

Mirjana Spoljaric, president of the International Society of Red Cross, said in a statement: “I strongly condemn the attacks against Red Cross staff. Aid distribution sites were shelled, this is inhumane.

ICRC teams are regularly present in the Donetsk region and their vehicles bear the Red Cross emblem, the statement said.

The attorney general’s office said on Telegram that ICRC workers had brought briquettes to keep residents warm ahead of winter. They were unloading aid supplies when the attack occurred, it said.

Two employees were hospitalized, one in critical condition, prosecutors said.

The Donetsk region, which is partially occupied by Russian troops, has been regularly bombarded by Russian artillery and air strikes.

Moscow denies targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure in its assault on Ukraine, though its attacks have killed thousands.
