Sept. 13—Washington Commanders cornerback Emmanuel Forbes Jr. tore the UCL in his right thumb and will undergo surgery on Friday, according to multiple reports.

Commander was injured in a 37–20 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 1. Forbes finished with four tackles.

It was not disclosed how long he would be out. According to the Washington Post, Forbes will miss the Commanders’ home opener against the New York Giants (0-1) on Sunday. The team will have more information about Forbes’ recovery time after surgery. If he is placed on injured reserve, he would miss at least four games.

He practiced in full on Wednesday and had a limited practice session on Thursday. Coach Dan Quinn said Forbes will wear a splint to protect his thumb.

The Commanders selected Forbes with the 16th overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The 23-year-old Forbes made 38 tackles, defended 11 passes and intercepted one pass in 14 games (six starts) during his freshman season.
