Sept. 13 – The Miami Marlins placed right-hander John McMillan on the 15-day injured list Thursday after he was hit by the second pitch in his relief appearance a day earlier and suffered a strained elbow.

In other moves, the Marlins activated right-hander Michael Peterson, selected the contract of right-hander Jeff Lindgren from Triple-A Jacksonville and assigned left-hander Jonathan Bermudez.

McMillan, 26, pitched briefly on Wednesday, allowing a run to Pittsburgh’s Nick Gonzales in the third inning. McMillan struck out without facing another batter, and the Pirates won, 3-1.

“Anytime you take a player out of the field and his arm or elbow isn’t feeling good, there’s always a concern, especially at the end of the season,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Thursday. “I don’t know how you can recover from that with only a few weeks left.”

“He’s been really good for us the entire time he’s been here and he’s done well in the backfield, so it’s definitely a big boost for our bullpen. You know, we’re hoping for a late couple of days (Thursday) to be the best outcome, so we’ll have more news tonight.”

McMillan is 2-1 on the season, his first in Miami, with a 1.50 ERA, five walks and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings across 10 relief appearances. He made his major league debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2023, posting a 2.25 ERA in four innings.

The Marlins selected Peterson, 30, on Tuesday after the Los Angeles Dodgers waived his eligibility. The 6-foot-7-inch rookie went 3-0 with a 6.43 ERA over 14 innings in 11 relief appearances with the Dodgers, including eight walks and 11 strikeouts.

“Michael Peterson is a big guy and you feel intimidated when you see him on the court, but he’s a really good guy,” Shoemaker said. “He’s always got a big fastball, 97-99 mph. So you’ll see him bring a lot of attack. He’s not afraid of anybody in the batter’s box. So, hopefully you’ll see him fill up strikes. Trust the zone and his stuff and see how he plays.”

Bermudez, 28, suffered his first loss in Wednesday’s loss to the Buccaneers. The rookie went 0-1 with an 8.10 ERA in 6 2/3 innings over three games (one start), allowing two runs and striking out four.

Lindgren, who turns 28 on Tuesday, appeared in three games for the Marlins during the 2023 season, posting a 5.14 ERA, allowing four hits and striking out one in seven innings. He appeared in 24 games (11 starts) for Miami’s Double-A and Triple-A affiliates this season, going 2-5 with a 6.19 ERA and 43 walks in 75 2/3 innings, striking out 70 times.
