September 13 – On Thursday, fourth-seeded French player Caroline Garcia defeated Japanese player Anna Shibahara 7-6(3), 7-6(5) to reach the fourth round of the Guadalajara Open in Mexico.

Garcia was up 4-1 in the first set tiebreaker but then gave up the match. Neither player broke serve in the second set and Garcia fell behind 4-3 in the next tie-break but then scored three consecutive points to win her second match point.

In the 1 hour 50 minutes of the match, Garcia hit 10 aces and saved 5 out of 6 break points.

Her quarterfinal opponent is sixth-seeded Czech Marie Bouzkova, who beat Italian Lucrezia Stefanini 6-2, 6-1.

Two other last-16 games are scheduled for Thursday night. Top seed Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia will face Marina Starcusic of Canada, and fifth seed Magdalena Frech of Poland will face Ashlyn Crews of the United States.

Tunisia Jasmine Open

Eva Liss of Germany defeated No. 1 seed Elise Mertens of Belgium 1-6, 6-2, 7-6(4) in the round of 16 in Monastir, Tunisia.

Lees was 4-0 up in the first set, but Mertens then won four games in a row. Mertens once led 6-5, but Lees held her own in the deciding game, and it was back and forth between the two sides before Lees won the final three points to seal the win.

Mertens outscored her opponent 7–0, but also committed seven double faults and won only a third of her second serve points (13 out of 39).

Italian No. 7 seed Lucia Bronzetti defeated American player Ann Li 6-4, 7-6(3), while Croatian player Antonia Ruzic defeated British opponent Yuriko Miyazaki 6-1. Also, Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez saved 13 of 18 break points to beat sixth seed Belgian player Grete Minning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.
