September 13 – Frankie Montas pitched six scoreless innings and Jackson Chourio hit his 20th home run Thursday night against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers. The Brewers beat the San Francisco Giants 2–1 to improve to 3–0.

With the win, the Brewers (84-62) extended their lead over the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division to nine games, with both teams having only 16 games remaining. Meanwhile, the Giants (72-75) are 8 1/2 games out of the race for the final NFC wild-card playoff spot.

Montas (7-10) was in complete control during his six innings, allowing just two hits and two walk-offs while striking out eight.

San Francisco’s only threat to the right-hander came when he gave up two-out singles in the fourth inning to Matt Chapman and Lamont Wade Jr. Montas then asked Jerard Encarnacion to line up.

The Giants fell behind 1-0 to Brewers reliever Aaron Ashby in the seventh inning after shortstop Willy Adames’ two-point error. But this time, Brett Wisely stepped up to end the threat.

Milwaukee’s first run came on a seventh-inning gift from Giants reliever Camilo Doval (5-2). The former closer walked Adams and threw three wild pitches over the next 11 pitches, allowing runners to reach base.

Dorval was San Francisco’s third pitcher, followed by Hayden Birdsong, who pitched five scoreless innings, and Eric Miller, who pitched inning number six, getting no runs. Birdsong allowed two hits, walked once and struck out four.

Jolio gave the Milwaukee bullpen some relief with his home run, and Bryce Turang also followed with a two-run hit in the eighth inning with a single.

The 20-year-old became the third Brewers player to hit 20 home runs, trailing Ryan Braun (34 in 2007) and Prince Fielder (28 in 2006).

The Giants made the game interesting in the ninth inning against the Brewers after Mark Cunha’s single and Encarnacion’s double. But Williams ensured the shutout and his 11th save by striking out Grant McCaffrey and striking out pinch-hitter Patrick Bailey.

Encarnacion was the only player in the game to have multiple doubles and singles. The Giants defeated the visitors 5–4.
