Sept 13 (Askume) – Meta Platform (META.O) said it will start using public content shared by adults on Facebook and Instagram in the UK in the coming months to train its artificial intelligence models, the company said in response to regulatory backlash after it halted training in the region.

The company said on Friday that it would use public posts, including photos, captions and comments, to train its generative artificial intelligence models , adding that the training materials would not include private messages or information from the accounts of users under the age of 18. Inside.

Meta decided to pause the rollout of its artificial intelligence models in Europe in mid-June after Ireland’s privacy watchdog asked the company to suspend data collection from social media posts .

The company later said the delay would also give it an opportunity to meet requirements from the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).

“While we have stopped training our generative artificial intelligence models in the UK to address regulatory feedback, we have been actively participating in the ICO… This clarity and certainty gives us confidence in Meta UK’s products much earlier,” Meta said on Friday.

Meta said Facebook and Instagram users in the UK would receive in-app notifications from next week explaining the company’s process and how users can object to the use of their content for training.

The ICO said in a statement that Meta has changed its practices since halting the scheme in June, also saying the company has simplified the way users can object to the processing of their data and made it easier to do so.

In June, Meta’s plan received a strong response from advocacy group NOYB , which urged national privacy regulators across Europe to prevent such use of social media content, saying the information would be subject to the EU’s strict privacy protections and insufficient transparency .
