September 15 – Brenton Doyle hit the game-winning RBI single in the 10th inning to help the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago Cubs 6–5 in Denver on Saturday.

Colorado forced extra innings with two outs in the ninth inning against Cubs reliever Porter Hodge on a two-run home run by Sam Hilliard.

In the 10th inning, Charlie Blackmon moved automatic runner Aaron Shank to third on a grounder, then was intentionally walked by Ezequiel Tovar. Doyle then hit a 3-2 curve ball to left field off Drew Smyly (3-8) to give the Rockies (57-92) their third consecutive win.

Tyler Kinley (6-1) sealed the win by striking out the Cubs in the top of the 10th inning.

Doyle also hit two sacrifice flies to give Colorado three RBIs, and Blackmon finished with three hits.

Rockies starter Kyle Freeland held Chicago to three runs on seven hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out three.

Cody Bellinger and Pete Crow-Armstrong homered for the Cubs (75-73), who trailed the New York Mets and Atlanta Braves by six games for the National League’s final wild-card spot.

Chicago right-hander Jameson Tallon held Colorado to two runs on five hits and a walk, striking out six in six innings. He entered the seventh inning with a 3-1 lead but was taken out after giving up a homer to Michael Toglia and a double to Jake Cave.

Seiya Suzuki took a 1-0 lead on a double homer off Dansby Swanson in the first inning, then Bellinger hit his 18th homer of the season in the fourth inning and the visitors took a 2-0 lead.

Tallon limited the Rockies to one hit through five innings before Aaron Shank and Blackmon hit back-to-back singles to give Colorado the lead in the sixth. Shank moved to third on Tovar’s lineout and scored on Doyle’s flyout to make it 2–1 for the Rockies.

In the seventh inning, Crow Armstrong singled to center to give the team a 3–1 lead, and then Tolia hit a home run for Colorado in the bottom of the inning.

Back-to-back singles in the eighth inning helped by a sacrifice fly by Michael Bush gave the Cubs a 4–2 lead.

Blackmon started the eighth inning with a double off Nate Pearson and advanced to third when Tovar flew out to right-center on the warning track. Doyle’s second sacrifice fly fell to Blackmon.

Crow-Armstrong was hit by a pitch in the ninth inning, stole second and then Ian Happ singled to make it 5–3.
