LOS ANGELES, Sept 15 (Askume) – Historical epic “Shogun” won the coveted best drama prize at the Emmy Awards on Sunday, which also beat favourite “Hackers” to win best comedy award, while Hollywood won TV’s best drama series prize.

Japanese stars Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai also won acting awards for “Shogun,” which tells a tale of political intrigue in 17th century Japan.

“Hackers,” based on a story about a 70-year-old comedian and a young writer, was a surprise winner for best comedy series, which awards experts said was also a perfect fit for a second season of the restaurant tale “The Bear.”

Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer,” about a bartender who is stalked by a patron, won best limited series.

“Bare” won three of its four comedy performance Emmys, including a third for Jean Smart, who played an aspiring stand-up comedian in “Hackers” and won the award.

Jeremy Allen White and Ebon Moss-Bachlak won their second consecutive Emmy Awards for Lead Actor in a Comedy and Supporting Actor for “Bare.” White stars as chef Carmine “Cami” Barzato, who is trying to turn her family’s Chicago sandwich shop into a fine restaurant.

“This show changed my life and made me believe that change is possible,” White said while accepting the award onstage at the Peacock Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

Moss-Bacharak won the trophy for his role as restaurant manager and Father’s cousin Richie.

Both actors won the same award at the last Emmy Awards, which took place in January when normal schedules were disrupted by a strike in Hollywood.

Surprisingly, Lisa Colon-Zayas won her third Emmy Award for Bears. She won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as chef Tina Marrero, alongside fellow veterans Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett.

When Smart won her third Emmy for her role as 70-year-old comedian Deborah Vance in “The Crackers,” she received a standing ovation.

“I’m grateful because I don’t get enough attention,” Smart joked on stage.

“Schitt’s Creek” stars Eugene and Dan Levy co-hosted the awards, becoming the first father-son duo to host the awards.

“If things go bad, my name will be announced as Martin Short,” Eugene Levy said, pointing to the “Only Murders in the Building” star in the audience.

Dan Levy joked that the Emmys should be called “broadcast’s biggest night in honor of movie stars on streaming services.”

Winners are selected by approximately 22,000 actors, directors, producers and other members of the Hollywood Television Academy.
