BANGKOK, Sept 16 (Askume) – Thailand’s finance ministry said on Monday it expects just under 40 million people to sign up for its main digital wallet distribution programme, with the first phase of the programme to be distributed to 14.5 million people from Sept 25, an official of the group said.

The government plans to provide assistance to 45 million people under its stimulus package

Finance Ministry Permanent Secretary Lavron Sensit told reporters that so far about 36 million people have registered for the scheme, some of them from disadvantaged groups.

He said, about 30 lakh people do not have a smartphone.

“Based on current data, the number of participants in the programme is not expected to reach 40 million, which will allow for more flexible budget management,” he added.

Delivery of the second phase is expected early next year, Lavron said.
