September 17 – Kirk Cousins threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to Derek London with 34 seconds remaining and the Atlanta Falcons beat the host Philadelphia Eagles 22–21 on Monday night.
The Falcons (1-1) trailed by six points with no timeouts and drove 70 yards on six plays in 65 seconds to win the game with 1:39 remaining.
The Eagles (1-1) missed a chance to run out the clock when Saquon Barkley broke up a pass on third-and-3 and Philadelphia ended up with Jake Elliott’s 28-yard field goal and a 21-15 lead.
After the touchdown, Cousins completed passes to Kyle Pitts for 11 yards, Darnell Mooney for 21 yards, Mooney for 26 yards, and London for 5 yards, reaching Philadelphia with 43 seconds remaining.
After an incomplete attempt, Cousins gave London a chance to tie the score 21–21 in the end zone with 34 seconds remaining. An unsportsmanlike penalty against London forced Youngho Koo to kick a 48-yard extra point.
Cousins passed for 241 yards and two touchdowns, and Bijan Robinson ran for 97 yards for the Falcons. It was Cousins’ first win since signing a four-year, $180 million deal with Atlanta in March and his first since rupturing his Achilles tendon last October.
Jalen Hurts passed for 183 yards and a touchdown and was intercepted late, while also rushing for 85 yards and a touchdown for Philadelphia. Barkley rushed for 95 yards in the Eagles’ home debut.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Falcons took the lead early in the second quarter on Koo’s 39-yard field goal.
The Eagles responded with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hurts to DeVonta Smith to increase the lead to 7–3 with 5:15 remaining in the first half.
Before halftime, Atlanta scored on Koo’s 22-yard field goal to make the score 7–6.
At the beginning of the third quarter, the two sides exchanged shots, Koo Yongsheng made a three-pointer from 34 yards and then Elliott made a shot from 29 yards.
After converting on 4th and 4, Cousins connected with Mooney for a 41-yard touchdown to take a 15–10 lead with 1:21 remaining in the third quarter.
Hurts’ 1-yard rush and Barkley’s scamp’s two-point conversion gave the Eagles an 18–15 lead with 6:47 remaining.
