NEW DELHI, Sept 17 (Askume) – India has condemned remarks by Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei about the treatment of Muslims in the South Asian country, calling them “unacceptable and based on misinformation”.

“We cannot consider ourselves Muslims if we do not understand the suffering of Muslims in Myanmar, Gaza, India or anywhere else,” Khamenei said in a social media post on Monday.

In response, India’s Foreign Ministry said it “strongly condemns” these comments.

A Foreign Office spokesperson said: “Countries that comment about minority groups are advised to check their own records before commenting about other groups.”

The two countries generally enjoy strong relations and the same will continue in May this yearSigned a 10-year contract to develop and operate Iran’s Chabahar Port .

India is developing the Chabahar port near the Gulf of Oman on Iran’s southeastern coast to transport cargo to Iran, Afghanistan and Central Asian countries without the need for rival Pakistan’s Karachi and Gwadar ports.

However, Khamenei has criticised India in the past over issues relating to Indian Muslims and the Muslim-majority Kashmir region.
