Since taking control of the airline in 2022, Tata has spent millions of dollars ordering hundreds of new aircraft and changing the airline’s logo, branding and aircraft livery , as well as making other upgrades to the airline’s operations.

Now the company is working with companies including Astronics (ATRO.O) , Thales (TCFP.PA) and RTX’s (RTX.N) Collins to retrofit older aircraft (27 narrow-body Airbus A320neos and 40 wide-body Boeing 787s and 777s) and perform interior modifications .

Air India did not immediately respond to a Askume request for clarification about the companies’ participation in the scheme and its $400 million payment.

The first narrow-body aircraft is said to have been upgraded on Monday and Air India plans to upgrade three to four aircraft every month.

Its total fleet currently stands at 128 aircraft, according to its website. Air India Group has ordered 470 aircraft from Airbus (AIR.PA) and Boeing (BA.N) .

The group includes low-cost carriers Air India Express and AirAsia India. From November, Air India will also operate flights from Vistara, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines(SIAL.SI) and Tata Group .
