We all know that a good night’s sleep is a luxury. I don’t just mean getting to sleep long enough (which is often difficult), but also getting quality sleep. Both of these are rare for me – I’m more likely to toss and turn and wake up the next morning with diminished energy and feeling sluggish.

That’s why the health trend of taking magnesium at night fascinates me. But what’s the real reason behind this trend? I asked the experts and tested it myself.

What do the experts say about sleep and magnesium?

Of course, I wanted to hear what the experts had to say about the magnesium trend. Jessica Sepel, nutritionist and founder of JSHealth Vitamins, is a big fan of magnesium: “Magnesium is a mineral that is involved in more than 300 chemical processes in the body. I like to think of it as relaxation in tablet form,” says the expert. According to her, this effect comes from two properties of the supplement: “Magnesium is known for its relaxing effect on muscles and its supporting role in energy production. It is a great way to prepare the body for night rest and regeneration processes. According to experts, magnesium can also help reduce cortisol, which reduces stress levels and supports the function of our nervous system.

What to look for when buying magnesium?

To benefit as much as possible from these properties, Sepel says, it’s worth researching the ingredients in your supplement: “Not all magnesium supplements are created equal. When choosing a high-quality supplement, the type and amount of magnesium it contains is very important.”

These are the changes I’ve noticed since I take magnesium every night

I’ve been taking magnesium pills every night for three months now, and I have to say: I’m a fan of this trend. I noticed I fell asleep faster, but most importantly, I actually slept through the night. I used to wake up at least once a night, often more often, but now I sleep until my alarm goes off almost every night. I can even wake up right away

Probably the biggest change is that I get out of bed immediately. I usually hit the snooze button at least three times, but since taking magnesium before bed, I wake up with more energy and want to get out of bed. I was very surprised by the results.
