MEXICO CITY, Sept 11 (Askume) – Commercial vehicle sales in Mexico are expected to reach record levels this year, the Mexican Automobile Dealers Association (AMDA) said on Wednesday.

Why is this important?

In 2023, Mexico exported $593 billion worth of goods, most of which were transported via land by truck or tractor-trailer. The flow of goods across the U.S.-Mexico border also made the two countries each other’s largest trading partners last year.

Manufacturing in Mexico is growing rapidly, with multinational companies moving their operations closer to the final destination of their products, often the United States. This is often referred to as “nearshore”.

Key Quotes

Rogelio Arzate, head of the National Association of Bus, Truck and Tractor-Trailer Producers (ANPACT), said: “We know that the nearshore sector offers unique opportunities for growth in Mexico, and it is also because of this, the country’s development offers unique opportunities. “It is important to ensure optimal conditions for stability, infrastructure and coordination to facilitate the development of supply chains, thereby boosting employment and economic growth.”

situation

In August, Volvo announced it would spend US$700 million to build a factory to produce heavy-duty trucks in the northern Mexican city of Monterrey. The company cited logistical efficiency benefits and the ability to sell vehicles in Mexico, Latin America and the southwestern and western United States from that location.

By number

AMDA expects commercial vehicle sales in Mexico to reach 56,592 units this year, surpassing the sales record of 53,300 units set in 2007.

The new record would be about 11% higher than 2023 sales.
