BERLIN, Sept 17 (Askume) – Germany has secured nearly 3 gigawatts (GW) of onshore wind power contracts in its latest auction, the Federal Network Agency said on Tuesday, a record number and an important step towards Germany’s renewable energy goals.

Germany aims to meet 80% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2030 as a step towards achieving climate neutrality by 2045.

“This auction set a record. Bids of almost 3 GW exceeded the annual expansion target of 2.5 GW,” agency President Klaus Müller said in a statement.

About 239 bids were submitted for the August 1 auction, totaling 2,961 megawatts (MW) of capacity, exceeding the quoted price of 2,709 MW, making it the first oversubscribed auction since February 2022.

The agency attributed the excess supply to an unusually high number of licenses submitted compared to previous rounds.

Bids in the auction ranged from 5.73 to 7.35 euro cents per kilowatt hour (ct/kWh), with the average winning bid reaching 7.33 ct/kWh, slightly below the maximum allowed price of 7.35 ct/kWh.

The agency said it will determine the quantity for the next auction in November by October 18.
