We all have a passion that embodies our personal style, and for me, it has always been jeans. As a fashion lover growing up in rural Canada, without access to the hottest new brands or gorgeous designer pieces, I developed a passion for using locally found denim and turning it into something avant-garde. Super skinny jeans, ripped jeans, paint-stained jeans; I love finding different combinations and often creating my own jeans to make them weird. Even today I have a wardrobe full of jeans—from baggy jeans to skinny jeans. They are my kryptonite! Do you blame me? There’s a reason they’re a classic wardrobe staple: they go with almost anything.
As a professional denim fan, I’m naturally excited about all the denim bags coming to the 2024 runways. I already love jeans, but why did I never think of denim accessories? Loewe’s casual hobo bag is perfect paired with clean light-wash jeans; Diesel’s shoulder bag is more worn and distressed, while Marine Serre has a monogram style with a leather strap. Pair the denim bag with dressy clothes like sleek knits, leather trench coats, and floral dresses, which will bring a casual cool touch to every look. I was instantly obsessed.
Of course, denim bags are nothing new. When brands like Dior introduced denim saddle bags in the 2000s, they were extremely popular. Do you remember the Louis Vuitton monogram jeans worn by fashion girls like Paris Hilton during the 2000s style era? These fun, beautiful going-out bags reflect the chaos (and a little vulgarity) of the time. However, the new version looks more sophisticated and has a more streamlined shape.
Still, as a daily denim wearer, I needed some help figuring out how to style a denim bag. Luckily, celebrities have styled these in a variety of ways over the years. Onboard inspiration? Rihanna paired her Balenciaga bag with a sporty knit and loose denim, and Blake Lively paired her Chanel bag with a crisp blazer and jeans. The lesson here is that no one should be afraid to wear denim; much like the allure of the Canadian tuxedo, wearing a bag with pants can yield a surprisingly sophisticated end result.
Celebrity-Approved Denim Bags
Fashion stars have proven that a denim bag can be paired with almost any outfit. Dua Lipa paired it with a denim bra top and jeans (monochromatic!), while Emma Chamberlain opted for a denim bag with a cropped denim jacket and high-waist khaki pants. Anything can really go, which is why denim bags have quickly become my new obsession. Sorry, little black bag – I told you to take a good rest!
