Angelina Jolie often turns to her tried-and-tested wardrobe: usually a trench coat with a long black skirt, or a luxurious gray knit. When it comes to evening wear, she doesn’t stray too far from neutral colors, often opting for a short black dress or a flowing white gown.
Jolie chose the latter at the New York premiere of “Maria,” Pablo Lalanne’s biopic about Greek opera singer Maria Callas. The actor wore a draped white dress by French fashion designer Madame Grès that dates back to the 1950s and was made by Amal Clooney’s antiques dealer Mon Vintage. “Angelina is really the ultimate inspiration for Mon Vintage,” founder Marie Blanchett told Eskume. “She was a real Hollywood star in the 1940s and 1950s, and she personally chose this gown from our Paris showroom, so it all feels very personal.”
Jolie launched her own fashion label last year, and this isn’t the first time she’s looked back at her recent archives. At the 2023 state dinner at the White House, she chose another striking white dress, this time from Chanel, which she paired with a vintage blazer, also from the French fashion house.
Meanwhile, Jolie’s own back catalogue has proven to provide fashion inspiration for others too. At this year’s Vanity Fair Oscars, Sydney Sweeney wore a stunning white gown designed by Marc Bouwer, which Angelina wore to the 2004 Oscars.
It just goes to show that a gorgeous white dress will always be a timeless classic — and not just for brides.
