Earlier this week, as I was walking home from King’s Cross station, the strap on my second-hand Fendi bag broke. I bought this thing that was supposed to be destroyed in March, but I’ve never given it much love: stuffed extra shoes, laptops and (yet to be read) hardcover books into a landfill, and left it festering under other people’s dirty coats at work events. I should fix it (but probably won’t).

This damage makes the bag almost useless for obvious reasons. Sad oversized clutch. I couldn’t sling it over my shoulders like before, but had to wrap my whole arm around its body like the models at Miu Miu and Prada’s Spring 2025 shows. However, this gesture of control says more about style than the monogrammed container. I learned that sometimes it’s not the bag that matters, but the attitude of wearing it.

Take Rihanna, for example, who was photographed strolling around Manhattan last night wearing a ribbed separates pajama top with an oversized coat from Bottega Veneta’s Fall 2024 collection. When she picked up the brand’s Sardine bag, she didn’t look up from the golden handles — how civil — but held it from the front. It’s a subtle, nonchalant gesture that could be read as “kiss my hand.”
