Last night at New York City Ballet’s Fall Fashion Gala, Giles Mendel of House of Giles revamped several of his designs. First, he hit the red carpet with principal dancer Tiler Peck (who spent a busy night as the show’s choreographer and featured dancer in the new production — details on that later), dressed in a powder blue hue with a flowy pleated strapless dress and cape. The hands-on designer could then be seen adjusting a gown for content creator Mary Leist, who was joined by a group of beautifully dressed women, including Huma. Let’s not forget Giles’ primary focus: as lead designer for NYCB’s Fall 2024 Fashion Gala, his exquisite costumes for choreographer Kelly Kwan’s “Beneath the Tides.”
“It’s like childbirth,” Giles said after the premiere. “You work on something for nine months and then suddenly this happens.” Jonathan Stafford also called them “enthusiastic.” “And the boys look attractive!” Giles said. In fact, they are sexy – it shows that the male dancers can control themselves in corsets.
The evening begins with a cocktail reception at Lincoln Center Plaza at 5:30 p.m. Sarah Jessica Parker (the New York City Chamber of Commerce board member who conceived of the fashion event more than a decade ago) wore a pink patterned silver tutu-style Oscar de la Renta dress. (She was accompanied by And Just Like That co-stars Nicole Ari Parker and Sarita Choudhury.) Near the fountain, Nicky Hilton posed in a black gown designed by Oscar de la Renta, co-owner of the Nicky Hilton Rothschild New York label. dutifully caring for her gown – and then there were Brooke Shields, Dianna Agron, Georgina Bloomberg, Andy Cohen (Andy Cohen), Laverne Cox, Jordan Roth, Amy Sedaris, Jeremy O. Harris, Justin Theroux and many more black-tie guests in the crowd.
At 7:00 p.m., it’s time to see a performance: a ballet trio, all choreographed by women. “Balanchine famously said, ‘Ballet is women,’ and tonight we are delighted to highlight women as creative visionaries,” said Wendy Whelan, Associate Artistic Director of New York City Ballet. This is the first program in New York City Ballet’s history to feature all female choreographers… Tonight, we bring the voices of three unique choreographers: Gianna Raison, Kelly Kwan and Tiler Peck, all three of whom bring a contemporary edge to classical ballet.
The first was Lisson’s ballet, created by Philip Glass, with costumes designed by NYCB costume director Marc Happel and created for students at the School of American Ballet, which was then brought to NYCB and the theater troupe. Three of the company dancers who performed last night actually got their roles while students at SAB. NYCB principal dancer Megan Fairchild, who recently completed a performance of her favorite ballet, Coppelia, is also a teacher at SAB and a proud mother, jumped for joy last night as some of the dancers entered, just like her father.
Later, Kwan’s moving ballet “Under the Tide,” based on Camille Saint-Saëns’ First Concerto, featured the Gilles family’s opulent costumes: men’s corsets with nothing underneath, and flowing midi dresses with sheer skirts. Throughout, the costumes changed from white to brown and charcoal and sparkled in the stage lights.
“I’m a little confused,” Kwan said after the work’s premiere – his first for the company. “I still don’t understand it all, but Giles is sitting right behind me and it’s a joy to watch with him – he’s a great collaborator. Once the living, breathing audience gets involved, something big happens. There’s a transformation.”
Tyler Peck executed Kwan’s choreography with the musicality and ease for which he is famous, then walked offstage and put his gown back on to watch the ballet “Two Frames,” which he premiered in the spring with costumes designed by Zac Posen and star dancers Mira Nadon (a rising star in the company) and the fabulous Roman Mejia (coincidentally, Peck’s fiancé).
“They took me out of the costume and I put on the Giles House costume and ran out and watched it from the front… I loved watching it from the audience. I could see the dancers having fun. It was so much fun and the end of the event was amazing, I never thought my work could do that!” Peck said.
After the dance, it was time for dinner and dancing. Guests attending the ceremony entered the theater courtyard, which was transformed into a moody autumnal banquet with lavish tablecloths and floral decorations that appeared to be taken from 16th-century Dutch flower paintings. As coffee and dessert were served throughout the room, speakers began playing Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso” and the dance portion of the evening began.
