BERLIN, Sept 12 (Askume) – The German government has ruled out a “permanent” blanket ban on toxic chemicals found in many household and everyday products, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday.

Speaking at a chemical industry conference, Scholz said it should be possible to use so-called PFAS substances where there are no alternatives, such as in medical products, semiconductors and electrolysers.

Forever chemicals are used in thousands of products and machines, including pharmaceuticals, automobiles, textiles and wind turbines for their long-term resistance to extreme temperatures and corrosion.

In February last year, the EU began considering a ban on these substances, in what could be the bloc’s most sweeping move to regulate the chemical industry.
