AMSTERDAM, Sept 20 (Askume) – A knife-wielding attacker stabbed a man in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam on Thursday night before being apprehended by police and bystanders.

Another person was injured during the incident, while the suspected attacker was overpowered and arrested.

Witnesses told Dutch broadcaster NOS that the suspect shouted “Allahu Akbar” (“God is greatest” in Arabic) during the attack.

Police did not confirm this and said they were investigating the motive behind the attack.

The victim was a 32-year-old local man, police said on Friday.

“The suspect was overpowered by bystanders and police officers and arrested,” a police statement said.

According to The Telegraph, a personal trainer who was leading an outdoor class knocked the suspect unconscious by breaking a squat bar in two, and other spectators threw chairs at him.

The surviving victim, a 33-year-old Swiss national, and the suspect were both taken to hospital for treatment.

The suspect is a 22-year-old man from Amersfoort, a city about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Rotterdam.

According to local media reports, the suspect attacked his first victim with a knife in a parking lot under Rotterdam’s Erasmus Bridge before moving to the street where he attacked another man, killing him.

Witnesses said the suspect was armed with two large knives and targeted individuals at random.
