BRUSSELS, Sept 20 (Askume) – Brussels Airlines said on Friday it would cancel most of its flights on Oct. 1 due to a nationwide strike by Belgian security personnel.

Brussels Airport, the country’s largest, has asked airlines to review their flight schedules as the strike will lead to reduced security checks.

The airport said it expected a large number of security personnel to participate in the strike and expected airport operations to be significantly affected on that day.

Brussels Airlines is based at Brussels Airport and is one of the hub airlines of the Lufthansa Group.

A Brussels Airlines spokesperson said 80% of the 203 flights on the day had to be cancelled. Passengers will be offered alternative flight schedules, including flights on an earlier departure date, a later departure date or via another Lufthansa Group hub on the same day.

According to Brussels Airport, around 2.4 million passengers and 18,600 flights passed through Brussels Airport last month.

The October strike comes less than a month after flight traffic was thrown into chaos at Charleroi Airport in Belgium, the main hub of budget airline Ryanair, as workers at the airport went on strike for several days.
