ROME, Sept 20 (Askume) – Energy ministers from the Group of Seven industrialised nations (G7) and other smaller countries will meet on Monday and the issue of Ukraine’s severely damaged power infrastructure will be on the agenda, Italy’s foreign minister said.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 , Ukraine’s energy system has been the target of Russian attacks , resulting in blackouts in some areas and limited electricity supply for several hours each day.

Ukraine’s power supply gap could reach 6 gigawatts this winter, roughly a third of expected peak demand, the International Energy Agency said in a report released Thursday .

On Thursday evening, Italian state broadcaster RAI said: “An extended G7 energy meeting will be held next Monday because we have to ensure Ukraine maintains its energy grid.” It did not disclose which non-G7 countries would take part in the talks.

The ministers will meet in person in New York, a diplomatic source told Askume on Friday.

Italy currently holds the rotating presidency of the G7.
