VILNIUS, Sept 9 (Askume) – A Russian military drone that crashed in Latvia on Saturday was probably carrying explosives bound for Ukraine, Latvian authorities said on Monday.

Romania and Latvia are both NATO members and supporters of Ukraine’s 2.5-year-old war with Russia .

According to the Latvian Delfi news website, Lieutenant General Leonids Kalniņš, commander of the Latvian National Armed Forces, said at a press conference that the drone that landed in Latvia was an Iranian-designed “Shahid” type drone.

Kalniņš told reporters that the drone’s explosives were probably destined for Ukraine but were defused after being found in Latvia.

The drone crashed in the village of Gegrava, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) from its border with Belarus, according to a Latvian Defense Ministry statement on Monday.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Giana on Sunday condemned the incidents as “irresponsible and potentially dangerous,” while saying there were no indications they were deliberate attacks against members of the alliance.
