PARIS, Sept 21 (Askume) – Martinique authorities are banning demonstrations in four cities, according to a statement released on Saturday, following a curfew imposed earlier this week after violent protests over rising living costs.

The cities of Fort-de-France, Le Lamentin, Ducos and Le Robert have banned all protests until Monday, the premier of Martinique, the local representative of the French central government in the overseas territory, said in a statement.

“This measure aims to put an end to the violence and disruptions that occur in gatherings and the multiple obstacles that affect the daily life and freedom of movement of all people, especially on weekends,” the governor said.

The premier previously imposed a nighttime curfew to restrict movement in some areas of Fort-de-France and Lamentin, which is set to end on Monday.

Protests have also taken place in neighbouring Guadeloupe, where residents have been without power this week due to a strike by workers of French power company EDF, according to a previous statement by the local governor.

Protests across France’s overseas territories, including the killing of two people in an overnight police action in New Caledonia , are a test for new Prime Minister Michel Barnier, who is due to present his message to President Eintracht after two weeks of political talks and introduce his cabinet.
