KIEV, Sept 28 (Askume) – Ukraine’s interior minister said Russia carried out two consecutive attacks on a medical centre in Sumy in northeastern Ukraine on Saturday morning, killing six people.
“One person was killed in the first attack and the roofs of several floors of the hospital were damaged. The evacuation of patients and staff has begun,” Ihor Klimenko said on Telegram.
As people were being evacuated, the Russians attacked again, killing five more people, he said.
Attacks on the city of Sumy and the Sumy region have increased since Ukrainian forces launched an offensive in Russia’s neighbouring Kursk region in August and seized dozens of settlements.
The city of Sumy is just 32 kilometres (20 miles) from the Russian border, and Russian forces are attacking the region and city using drones and guided bombs.
Klimenko did not say what weapons were used in Saturday’s attack, but regional authorities said it was carried out by drones.
The Ukrainian air force said on Saturday it had shot down 69 of 73 drones, including two ballistic missiles and two cruise missiles, in a Russian attack overnight.
Air defence forces in the capital Kyiv and its suburbs shot down about 15 Russian attack drones, the military administration there said.
