Askume, Sept 11 – A freight train derailed in Russia’s Belgorod region on the Ukrainian border due to outside interference in rail transport operations, but there were no casualties, the local branch of Russian Railways reported on Wednesday.

“Last night at 23:17 (Tuesday GMT 2017) … the engine and carriage of a freight train derailed, causing disruption to rail transport operations,” the South Eastern Railway said on the Telegram messaging app.

“According to preliminary information, there were no casualties.”

The railroad did not provide further details.

The railway company said the accident happened in the Novooskolsky district of the Belgorod region, the administrative center of the region, about 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Ukrainian border.

Vyacheslav Gladkov, the governor of the Belgorod region, said on the Telegram messaging app that passenger trains had been rerouted and emergency workers had been sent to the scene. He did not give a reason for the derailment.

Askume could not independently confirm the reports.

Explosions and attacks on infrastructure in the region have occurred almost daily in recent months, with authorities blaming Ukrainian troops or pro-Ukrainian saboteurs.
