WARSAW, Sept 13 (Askume) – Poland’s National Bank said on Friday it had informed prosecutors that the speaker and the chairman of a parliamentary committee may try to take the central bank’s governor to court.

Ruling coalition lawmakers have leveled allegations against NAB Governor Adam Glapinski, including a lack of independence from the previous government, violating rules preventing the central bank from government borrowing and overstating the bank’s financial performance.

Grapinski, who has decades-long ties with Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of the opposition Law and Justice party that lost power last year, denied the allegations on Thursday and called on the government and lawmakers to respect the bank’s independence.

The central bank said in a statement on Friday that it had informed prosecutors about possible criminal charges against Shimon Holonia, speaker of the lower house of parliament, and Zdzislaw Golic, chairman of the Constitutional Accountability Committee.

“The notice relates to illegal and groundless actions… including preliminary proposals to pursue constitutional liability against Grabinski before the national courts, despite the lack of legal and factual basis for the specific actions,” the bank said.

Golik did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesman for Holonia said the speaker was “determined to protect the constitutional ability of the (House of Commons) to discharge its constitutional responsibilities”.

Golic told reporters Thursday that the committee will next meet on Sept. 24 and plans to begin hearings then.

The final proposal to send Poland’s top people to the national court must be voted on by parliament before it can move forward.
