KIEV, Sept 17 (Askume) – Russian forces have attacked energy infrastructure in Ukraine’s northeastern Sumy region, cutting off power to some areas and forcing authorities to resort to backup power systems, local officials said on Tuesday.

Regional officials said via the Telegram messaging app that the attack caused damage in the region’s Konotop, Okhtyrka and Sumy districts and that critical infrastructure had been put on standby.

The Samui Water Utility said it had switched to emergency power supply after it lost power during the night due to the attack.

Sumy’s acting mayor, Atem Kobzar, said there were no casualties in the city and energy workers were dealing with the aftermath of the attack.

Regional officials said air defense systems shot down 16 drones in the region.

The Ukrainian Air Force said Russia launched 51 drones to attack the country overnight and shot down 34 of them after air defence work in five regions was completed.
