LOS ANGELES, Oct 2 (Askume) – Melania Trump will write in her upcoming memoir that women have a right to have an abortion, while her husband Donald Trump has called on U.S. states to ban abortion.
“Why should anyone other than a woman have the right to decide whether to vote for a woman or not?” Melania Trump writes in her memoir, The General Election.
“Restricting a woman’s right to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to taking away her control over her own body,” she wrote in her memoirs. “I carried this belief with me throughout my adult life.”
The Guardian said it had obtained a copy of the book, titled “Melania,” which will be published on Oct. 8. A spokesman for the former first lady did not immediately respond to a Askume request for comment.
Republican Donald Trump has previously expressed support for a national ban on pregnancies beyond 15 weeks, but in April he said political considerations would be the primary factor in the election after the US Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v Wade decision.
Trump said abortion laws should be made by the states and supported bans on abortion in cases of rape and incest, as well as exceptions to protect the life of the mother.
Surveys show the presidential election is a tight race, with the outcome determined by seven key states.
Democrats see abortion rights as a populist issue that Harris could use against Trump. A Askume/Ipsos poll conducted from August 21 to 28 found that a majority of voters, including 34% of Republicans, want the next president to protect or expand abortion access.
“Sadly for women across America, Mrs. Trump’s husband strongly disagrees with her views, which is why more than one-third of American women support Trump,” a Harris campaign spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
Trump credited the Supreme Court’s 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which protected abortion rights up to about 24 to 28 weeks, with the votes of Trump-appointed judges.
