Sept 15 (Askume) – Brimin Misoy of Kenya and Worknesh Adessa of Ethiopia won the Sydney Marathon on Sunday, setting course records in the men’s and women’s races respectively.

Misoy crossed the finish line in front of the Sydney Opera House in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 17 seconds, 46 seconds shy of the record set by compatriot Moses Kibet two years earlier.

The Kenyan athlete finished ahead of Ethiopia’s Chalu Deso Gelmisa, who finished second with a time of 1 minute and 44 seconds, while Kenyan athlete Felix Kiptoo Kilwa took third place.

Meanwhile, the Edessa team shattered Stella Barsosio’s old record at Sydney Stadium in 2019 by almost three minutes, with Ethiopia taking a podium spot.

The 32-year-old, who won the Osaka Marathon earlier this year, finished the race in 2 hours, 21 minutes and 40 seconds, well ahead of compatriots Ruti Aga and Gotitom G Gotitom Gebreselez, both of whom also fell short of their previous record.

With 24,000 runners competing around the Harbour City, the Sydney Marathon has the largest venue of any endurance classic marathon held in Australia.

The event is in the second year of the evaluation process and from 2025 it will join the World Marathon Majors alongside the Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York marathons.
