Sept 17 (Askume) – The World Boxing Council will host its first world championships in Liverpool next year, it said on Tuesday, as the organisation continues its efforts to establish itself as a recognised international federation for the sport of boxing.

World Boxing was launched in 2023 with 44 members to fill the gap left by the International Boxing Association (IBA) .

Last year, the International Olympic Committee derecognised the IBA , which has not yet included the sport in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, and urged national boxing federations to form a new global boxing body in place of the IBA.

Unlike the two separate tournaments organised by the IBA, the World Boxing Championships will feature both men’s and women’s events. The boxers will compete in ten weight categories, which will be finalised later this year.

The championship will be held from September 4 to 14 next year.

Association president Boris van der Vorst said: “Liverpool is a globally renowned city with a proud tradition in boxing and it will be a fantastic location to host our first elite World Boxing Championships.”

“This will be a great showcase for boxing at the Olympics, especially as it will be the first time that men and women will compete together as part of the same championship.”

The IBA will also hold two World Championships in 2025, with the men’s competition in Astana, Kazakhstan and the women’s competition in Belgrade, Serbia.
