September 30 – Alex Verdugo hits a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and the New York Yankees advance over the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 6–4 in their final regular season game on Sunday afternoon.
Trent Grisham had a two-run homer and an RBI. Gleyber Torres had a single and two doubles and scored twice for the Yankees (94-68), who will host the American League Division Series next Saturday.
New York starter Clarke Schmidt gave up four runs and three hits in four innings. The right-hander had five strikeouts and walked four batters.
Luke Weaver (7-3) pitched a scoreless eighth inning to get the win. Clay Holmes recorded his 30th perfect save in the ninth inning.
Pittsburgh starter Bailey Falter allowed four runs and four hits in three innings. The left-hander reached base three times and recorded no strikeouts.
Joey Bart had two hits and an RBI. Joshua Palacios homered and scored two for the Pirates (76-86), who finished last in the National League Central.
Carmen Mlodzinski relieved Colin Holderman (3-6) with two outs in the eighth inning when pitcher hit Austin Wells. Mlodzinski walked the next two batters to load the bases, then Verdugo hit a single to right to give the Yankees a 6-4 lead.
Torres greeted Falter with a double on the first pitch. After the game started, Grisham took over from Aaron Judge after the game was delayed by rain for about 90 minutes, then he pulled the first pitch over the right fence and hit a two-run home run.
The Pirates took the lead in the third inning with a one-hitter, a walk, and an infield single by first baseman Ben Rice. Palacios then hit a two-run double to the right corner to tie the score at 2–2.
Jared Triolo followed with a sacrifice fly to give Pittsburgh a 3–2 lead.
Torres hit his second double of the game in the bottom of the third, moving runners to second and third with no outs. Grisham’s RBI single to right tied the score at 3–3.
Giancarlo Stanton’s double grounder scored again, giving New York a 4–3 lead.
Schmidt came out of the game after giving up a walk to Bryan Reynolds in the top of the fifth inning. Mark Leiter Jr. came in to give up a walk to O’Neil Cruz and then allowed Butt’s RBI double to the left corner to tie the game at 4–4.
