September 11 – Andrew McCutchen hits a three-run homer to give the Pittsburgh Pirates a 6–4 win over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Bryan Reynolds had two hits, two runs and an RBI and Isiah Kiner-Falefa added two hits and a run for the Pirates (69-76), after the Buccaneers won the first two games of the three-game series. Pittsburgh has won three in a row.

Carmen Mlodzinski served as the Pirates’ opener, striking out all six batters she faced with one strikeout.

Joey Wentz (1-2), Kyle Nichols, Ryan Borucki, David Bednar and Dennis Santana combined to give up three runs and six hits over the next five innings. Aroldis Chapman allowed a run in the ninth inning but earned his eighth save.

Marlins starter Adam Oller (1-3) went five innings, allowing six runs and seven hits with two strikeouts and three walks.

Johnny Pereda had three hits and an RBI. And scored, Kyle Stowers had a double-double and RBI for Miami (54-91). And after scoring a point, the Miami Heat lost 3-2 in Monday’s series opener.

The Pirates welcomed Oler with back-to-back singles by Kina-Falefa and Reynolds, who advanced to second with a hit after the Marlins’ attempt to move Kina-Falefa to third failed.

O’Neil Cruz then scored on a grounder to second base. After McCutchen loaded the bases, third baseman Jake Berger hit a grounder off Joey Bart, giving the team another run and a 2–0 lead.

Wentz got the first two outs of the fifth before Stowers doubled on eight pitches. Nichols came in, walked David Hensley on seven pitches, and allowed Pereda to hit an RBI double on another complete pitch. A single to right made the score 2-1.

Oller allowed a leadoff walk in the second inning, a single in the third and a single in the fourth, but gave up a leadoff double to Jared in the fifth, followed by Triolo, where his luck ran out.

Two batters later, Reynolds drove in a triple with a single to center. After Cruz loaded the bases, McCutchen hit Oller’s first pitch over the fence to left-center field for a 6-1 lead. It was McCutchen’s 20th home run of the year.

Jonah Bride’s sacrifice fly in the sixth inning made the score 6–2. Nichols hit the ball out of bounds and Borucki caught Stowers’ double down the left field line, making the score 6–3.

For the second night in a row, Chapman allowed a run in the ninth inning, this time on Berg’s RBI single to make the score 6–4. With the potential tying run loading the bases, Chapman struck out Otto López to end the game.
