Oakland starting pitcher Mitch Spence (8-9) struck out six in five innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and allowing a base hit to snap a three-game losing streak. Mason Miller allowed a run and struck out two in the ninth inning for his 26th save of the year.

Ian Happ hit his second home run of the night, a solo shot over the left field wall to cut the Cubs’ deficit to one run (77–74) in the ninth inning. At this point, he tied his career high in a season with his 25th long ball of the season.

In the sixth inning, Oakland began to pose a threat thanks to reliever Sean Armstrong. With two on and one out, Max Schumann hit a hard-hit ball that was intended to go to right field but was stopped by a leaping second baseman Nico Horner, the latter successfully completing a double.

The Cubs had chances to score with two runners on in each of the first two innings, but were unable to take advantage and fell behind with three runners on in the third inning.

Happ started the inning with a single to right center to make it 3-1. Cody Bellinger then singled and scored on Michael Bush’s base hit to put Chicago up 3-2.

Oakland was ahead 2–0 in the first inning. Brent Rooker singled and then Langeliers hit a fastball into the center field seats.

In the third inning, Lawrence Butler hit his 22nd home run of the season, a perfect solo shot, to make the score 3–0.

Horner went 3–4 for Chicago.
