Sep 20—Brandon Fifty overcame his worst start with a game-winning hit in the seventh inning to lead the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5–1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday night, the first game of a four-game series and keeping momentum in the pursuit of the National League wild – card.

Faught (10-9), who was taken out by Milwaukee on Saturday after giving up eight runs in 1 2/3 innings in his last outing, allowed only one run in the fourth inning before Garrett Mitchell hit a two-run single in the seventh inning.

Fatt struck out a career-high 12 times, including seven consecutive strikeouts, tying a franchise record, and didn’t walk a single base in 104 pitches. AJ Pook and Justin Martinez each pitched perfect innings, giving up two hits.

Arizona (85-68) trails unseeded San Diego by two games for an NFC wild-card spot. The New York Mets tied the tie with the Diamondbacks by beating Philadelphia 10-6 on Thursday. Atlanta is in first place in the postseason, two games behind the Diamondbacks and Mets.

Pavin Smith gave the Diamondbacks a 5–1 lead by giving up a home run to Joe Ross in the eighth inning (his eighth), then Christian Walker hit a home run.

The Diamondbacks broke a dead tie by scoring three runs on one hit in the fifth inning. Gabriel Moreno and Geraldo Perdomo loaded the bases with back-to-back walks. Corbin Carroll then reached base on third baseman Andrew Monasterio’s error, scoring Moreno.

Ketel Marte hit an RBI single over the wall in right field, chasing starter Tobias Myers. Walker made it 3–0 on Aaron Ashby’s sacrifice fly.

Myers (8-6) allowed three runs — one earned — on four hits in four innings with five strikeouts and three walks. Myers won games against the Pats and Diamondbacks in his last game.

Milwaukee (88-65) won the National League Central Division on Wednesday, three games behind the Phillies and Dodgers, who have the best records in the NL. The top two teams will receive a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
