Sept. 17—Brenton Doyle scores on a throwing error in the bottom of the ninth inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3–2 on Monday night in Denver.

The loss narrowed Arizona’s lead in the National League wild-card round to one game against the New York Mets and two games against Atlanta.

Doyle finished with two hits and two stolen bases, and Ezequiel Tovar and Hunter Goodman each hit third base for Colorado (58-93) in just 11 attempts this season and beat the Diamondbacks (83-67) for the third time. Seth Halvorson (2-0) pitched two innings of relief to get the win.

With the game tied in the ninth inning, Doyle singled to lead off with a single and then stole second. Ryan Thompson (7-5) intentionally walked Ryan McMahon and called Brendan Rodgers on a potential double play, who struck out second baseman Ketel Marthe.

Marte threw a pass to shortstop Geraldo Perdomo, but Perdomo’s first-down catch was mistimed and Doyle reached home plate with the winning run.

Marte homered and Gabriel Moreno had two hits for Arizona.

Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela allowed two runs on four hits over three-plus innings in his first big league start since May 10, 2023. He underwent Tommy John surgery late that summer and rehabbed five times during the year before making his debut Monday night.

Senzatela’s first start in 16 months did not go well. Corbin Carroll led off the inning with a triple and Marte hit his 32nd homer to center base to give the Diamondbacks a 2–0 lead.

This continued until Tovar hit his team’s 24th home run of the season in the fourth quarter.

Arizona starter Merrill Kelly allowed no hits in six innings and gave Arizona the lead with a two-run double in the fifth. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out five, but was denied the win when Goodman hit his 12th homer of the season on reliever Kevin P. Kinkel’s single.
