September 17 – William Contreras struck out three and Aaron Civale allowed one run in five innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers 6–2. The win over the Philadelphia Phillies was the first of a three-game series between the division leaders.

Milwaukee’s magic number to win the NFC Central title dropped to two. The Brewers (87-63) are 10 games ahead of the second-place Cubs (77-73), who beat the Oakland Athletics 9-2.

Philadelphia (90-60) is eight games ahead of the New York Mets (82-68) in the NL East and one game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers (89-61), who have the best record in the NL.

Civale (7-8) started the sixth after giving up back-to-back singles to Kyle Schwarber and Trea Turner. He walked one and struck out six. Hobey Milner took over and retired the next three batters to get the team out of trouble.

Collin Rea, who has appeared in 25 games this season, held the Phillies scoreless over the final 2 2/3 innings and earned the first save of his career.

Philadelphia starter Suarez (12-7) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings. He struck out five and gave up three walk-offs.

Contreras hit a home run in the third to give Milwaukee a 2-0 lead. Jackson Chourio walked with one out and Blake Perkins singled. Contreras followed with a two-point inside shot into the gap in left-center.

The Brewers added a run in the fourth inning with a walk by Rhys Hoskins, a double by Sal Frericks, and then a sacrifice fly by Joey Ortiz.

Brandon Marsh gave the Phillies the lead with a two-out solo home run in the fifth inning, his 16th of the inning.

Milwaukee scored two runs off Jose Alvarado in the sixth inning. Gary Sanchez walked and Sal Fralic moved to second on a fielder’s choice pitch. Ortiz gave up a triple to Fralic and Bryce Turang followed with an RBI single to make it 5-1.

In the seventh inning, Schwarber’s RBI single made it 5–2 for the Phillies. Milwaukee responded on Sánchez’s sacrifice fly in the bottom half.
