Sept. 28—Bryan Wu throws five scoreless innings as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 2–0 on Friday night.
Mitch Garver and Cal Raleigh homered for the Mariners (83-77), who had a bye and were eliminated in the American League wild-card game a day earlier.
The Athletics (69-91) finished the regular season Thursday afternoon after playing their final game at the Coliseum. The team is expected to play the next three seasons in Sacramento, California, while their new stadium in Las Vegas is under construction.
Woo (9-3) allowed just three hits. The right-hander collected one walk and eight strikeouts.
The only hits given up by the Woo were Jack Geloff’s two-out single in the second inning, J.J. Blades’s leadoff single in the fourth inning and Seth Brown’s one-out homer in the same inning.
Woo got out of trouble by striking out Grove and allowing Jacob Wilson to ground out to second baseman Leo Rivas.
Seattle’s Gabe Speer, Gregory Santos, Taylor Saucedo and Troy Taylor pitched scoreless innings of relief, including six strikeouts to complete the shutout.
Taylor got his first double in the ninth inning off Tyler Soderstrom, who advanced to third on a wild pitch, but Tyler responded by striking out Daz Cameron and Geloff, and got his first major league save by striking out Wilson.
Oakland southpaw J.P. Sears (11-13) lost despite a strong start. Sears allowed two runs on four hits in six innings, walked three and struck out four.
The Mariners regained the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Garver hit Sears’ four-seam fastball over the center field wall.
Seattle doubled its lead with one out in the third. Raley, who was the designated hitter, launched the first change to deep left-center. It was Raley’s 32nd home run of the season and gave him 97 RBIs.
