September 14 – Rookie Hunter Goodman hit two home runs, including a game-winning grand slam in the eighth inning, and drove in a career-high seven runs to lead the Colorado Rockies on Friday night in Denver, the team failing to beat the Chicago Cubs 9–5 in Denver.

It was the second time this season that Goodman had a double home run and he helped Colorado (56-92) to its second consecutive win with three hits. Ezequiel Tovar also had two hits, and Ryan McMahon and Michael Toglia each had two hits.

The game was tied in the eighth inning when Chicago reliever Drew Smyly (3-7) allowed two singles and a walk. After striking out Nolan Jones, Goodman hit his first major league grand slam and his 11th homer of the season off Nate Pearson.

Michael Bush homered and had three hits, Isaac Paredes also had three hits, and Cody Bellinger and Dansby Swanson had two hits each for the Cubs. Chicago (75-72) has lost two games in a row.

The Cubs got Rockies’ starter Austin Gomber out early. Ian Happ doubled, Swanson doubled, and both scored on Bellinger’s single.

Colorado responded in the second inning. McMahon led off with a single and then scored on Brendan Rodgers’ double to left field. Javier Assad retired the next two batters, but Goodman singled to left field, his 10th of the season, to give the Rockies a 3-2 lead.

Colorado extended its lead in the fourth inning on Goodman’s RBI single.

That was all the Rockies got from Assad, who allowed four runs on seven hits and five walks in six innings.

Gomber allowed two runs in six innings and Tovar hit a solo home run in the seventh, his 23rd, and was expected to give him the win, but reliever Victor Vodnik (4-3) made it 5-2 in the eighth inning.

Bellinger and Paredes had singles, and Bush’s 18th home run tied the Cubs and set the stage for Goodman’s heroics.
