September 13 – Juan Soto hits a game-ending single in the 10th inning and the New York Yankees beat the visiting Boston Red Sox 2–1 on Thursday night (Boston Red Sox), which becomes the first game of a four-game series.

Soto hit a 2-2 single off shortstop Trevor Story’s glove to left field off Josh Winckowski (4-2), scoring runner Jon Berti, who replaced automatic runner Gleyber Torres, to give the Yankees their fourth win of the season.

Soto’s game-winning hit gave the Yankees (85-62) their fifth win in seven games and put them two games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles in first place in the AL East. New York has its largest lead in the division since taking over first place on Aug. 21.

After the hit, Soto was mobbed by teammates at second base and had water sprayed on him by Aaron Judge and Anthony Volpe while doing postgame interviews near the Yankees dugout.

Clay Holmes (3-5) made the final two outs of the first half, setting the stage for Soto’s dramatic hit.

Torres hit a home run off Boston starter Cooper Criswell for his 13th of the season, his third career homer. The Yankees held the lead until Danny Jansen smashed a 2-2 slider off New York lefty Nestor Cortes into the left-field seats in the fifth inning. The home run was Jansen’s ninth of the season.

Cortez allowed one run on three hits in five innings. The left-hander tied a season-high with nine strikeouts for the fourth time and finished with three walk-offs in a 92-pitch game.

After allowing Jansen to hit a home run, Cortez allowed a run to Wilier Abreu, who stole second and advanced on a wild pitch. Cortez then struck out Rafael Devers, allowing Abreu to move to third.

Criswell allowed one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Criswell struck out four, walked three and was lifted after Giancarlo Stanton struck out.

After Stanton struck out, Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled to Cam Booser but was caught stealing. After Jason Domingos and Anthony Rizzo hit back-to-back home runs, Volpe got his second consecutive double in the fourth, which flew to left field.
