September 15 – Donovan Solano had a triple-double on four hits, Joe Musgrove gave up five hits with two relievers, as the San Diego Padres team earned its second straight win Saturday night with an 8–0 victory over the host San Francisco Giants.

The win puts the Padres (84-65) not only 1 1/2 games ahead of the other teams in the National League wild-card round, but also 3 1/2 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (87-61) at the top.

For the second night in a row, the Padres scored in the top of the first inning and never looked back. This time, Manny Machado’s double and a throwing error by center fielder Heliot Ramos drove Jurickson Profar home.

Xander Bogaerts hit his 10th home run in the fourth inning to make the score 2–0, then the Padres hit three more home runs in the fifth and three more in the eighth to tie the game.

Machado had a two-run single in the fifth inning and Jackson Merrill had a two-run double in the eighth.

The Padres’ six runs came after Giants starter Mason Black (0-4) exited after four innings. He allowed 2 runs (1 ERA), 6 hits, 1 walk and 2 strikeouts.

Musgrove (6-5) pitched six perfect innings, giving up just three hits: Lamont Wade Jr.’s single in the second, Mark Canha’s single in the third and Patrick Bailey’s single in the fifth. He walked no and struck out eight batters.

Adrian Morejon and Alex Jacob combined to allow just two hits over three innings to complete the Padres’ 14th shutout of the season.

Solano’s four-hit game was the 10th of his career. He had four hits in three years with the Giants, including one against the Padres in 2020.

Fernando Tatis Jr. had three hits and scored two runs, Luis Arraez and Profar also scored two runs, and Machado, Merrill, Arraez and Kyle Higashioka each had two hits as the Padres beat the home team 17–5.

It was the third consecutive loss for the Giants (72-77), who fell 9 1/2 games behind the final NFC wild-card spot with 13 games remaining.
