September 18 — Ezequiel Tovar had three hits, including a home run, and Hunter Goodman also hit deep, as the Colorado Rockies (Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8–2 on Tuesday in Denver.

It was Bud Black’s 535th win with Colorado (59-93), moving him past Clint Hurdle for most wins as a head coach in franchise history.

Brendan Rodgers, Ryan McMahon and Jordan Baker each had two hits, leading to a strong showing by Ryan Feltner (3-10). The right-hander allowed just two runs in 6 2/3 innings but held Arizona to five hits and two walks.

Christian Walker homered and Pavin Smith had a double for the Diamondbacks (83-68). Arizona has lost seven of 11 games and is tied with the New York Mets for the final two NL wild-card spots. Both teams are two games ahead of the Atlanta Braves.

The Rockies took the lead in the second inning against Diamondbacks starter Jordan Montgomery (8-7). Michael Toglia doubled to right field on a short pitch and scored when Jacob Stallings doubled to left. Baker hit a two-out double off Stallings to give Colorado a 2-0 lead.

Tovar hit the team’s 25th home run in Game 3 and his second home run in two nights to increase the lead to 3-0. That was the last run Montgomery gave up in 4 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits, walked two and struck out four.

The Diamondbacks got a comeback in the fourth quarter. Smith hit his second double of the night, advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt and scoring on Eugenio Suárez’s grounder to shortstop.

The Rockies extended their lead in the sixth inning against reliever Scott McGough. With one out, Nolan Jones walked and Baker singled, both recording a double steal. Brenton Doyle led off Jones with a sacrifice fly and Tovar’s single to center brought Baker home.

Goodman’s single (his 13th of the season) in the seventh made it 6–1, but Walker hit his 26th single of the year with one out in the eighth.

Colorado won in the bottom of the eighth inning on RBI singles from McMahon and Rodgers.
