September 28 – Josh Lowe went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Taj Bradley allowed a double and pitched six scoreless innings as the visiting Tampa Bay Rays beat the Boston Red Sox 2–1 on Friday, opening a three-season series.
Lowe scored the game’s first run in the seventh inning when the Rays (79-81) scored two runs, then scored after a bases-loaded walk by Christopher Morrell.
Bradley (8-11) struck out seven, including at least one in every inning, while allowing just three hits and one walk-on.
Tampa Bay snapped a three-game losing streak.
Von Grissom went 3 for 4 and Nick Sogard drove in for Boston (80-80), which allowed starter Nick Pivetta (6-12) to pitch 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball.
Gleason got a third hit in the ninth, but Edwin Uceta recorded his fifth save of the season to ensure the win.
The visitors allowed only two hits in six innings, but gave up two runs to Pivetta in the seventh. Jonathan Aranda loaded the bases with one out, then Johnny DeLuca singled to right base.
Lowe’s Green Monster RBI double started the scoring, but Deluca was thrown out on the relay run, keeping the score at 1–0.
Jack Penrod relieved Pivetta, walked Richie Palacios, hit José Caballero with a pitch, and then walked Morel) to force in a run. Penrod struck out with no one out, Luis Guerrero took over the mound and received an inning-ending grounder from Yandy Diaz.
The Red Sox came back in the seventh inning when Colin Poche replaced Bradley. Gleason and Romy Gonzalez hit back-to-back singles, leading to a sacrifice fly to Sogard.
In the fifth inning, Lowe singled into the left field corner and advanced on an error by Red Sox left fielder Jalen Duran. Pivetta escaped the threat and struck out in the seventh inning for the first time since July 29.
After Penrod, Luis Guerrero and Luis Garcia combined to pitch 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the Boston bullpen.
